The Thing

-The Thing- [Revival] by Vicboy

What started as a soon-to-be-dead experimental map in Early 2011 suddenly turned into a Top 50 Played, extremely underdeveloped, map in the Late 2012. (Literally, I just woke up to find out my old map is being played by hundreds)

The game is inspired by two things: A WarCraft III map called Survive the Night by CreativeStrats and the 1982 film: John Carpenter's The Thing.

The game works like this: You start alone in a far away secluded station and one of your crew is a deadly monster disguised as a human. You need to group up to defeat it but you can only communicate to the ones you're near at. So, you have to look around for a team but how do you know the ones you meet are not it? How can you trust him? How can they trust you? There are items scattered around the station to aid you. Arm yourself and kill the Thing before it escapes to Earth.

The video is a fan-made guide to playing as The Thing.

I don't think a direct comparison between this and Xeno Crisis is really useful. Xeno Crisis is more of a deception/survival adventure game, whereas this seems more like a "Cat & Mouse" style map. That isn't to say it's bad, of course.

    My Projects:
    Malum Ruina: SC2Mapster
    Eternal Exile: SC2Mapster
    Spine Crawler Madness: SC2Mapster
    Xeno Crisis: SC2Mapster

Urban The Thing was made by some other guys and while it did bring up some of the tention of Falrinth's The Thing, it still was just a clone which was (as you said before) stuffed with some additional content which didn't really fit the purpose of the concept: They concentrated on adding more objects like different kinds of marines and things and (i think this was never really released) vehicles instead of adding useful content - something to increase the tention. They added stuff which made you feel more comfortable (by customizing your marine to your own likings) and decreased the amount of team play (also through their map design), which was not the way i wanted my suspicion-themed map to go. That's why I quit after several games and have never played it again (honestly, back then it wasn't even possible anymore to play this map due to the popularity system ).

Actually... while I wrote this I kinda understood what you were going for with your previous statement :D Nevertheless I think you should work on some more content buuuuut... make it fit :P

What a luck I still have a cached version of Falrinth's The Thing :D ... But I guess unless I upload it to Battle.net (which of course i wont) I don't get to play it anytime soon :( (until Falrinth finally finishes his project - assuming he's still working on it)

    @Oelfrachter: Go

I've heard about that game and its disappearance. Isn't Urban The Thing its successor?

Actually... I think adding stuff usually does make a game better. Of course it needs to be done right and has to be understandable for the new players and still a lot of fun for the older players, but if you manage to pull that off correctly, the players can get a lot more out of your game.

Your game (only through what I've seen in the video) looks quite good but I have the feeling that it could get boring very fast. It seems unfinished. You even stated yourself that your map still needs some development. So why don't you take thomulf's 'critique' (it barely was one - and if so, then not a really good one) as a motivation to improve your map.

I hope you're going to release this map in EU too ^^

Btw... My favourite thing-map was 'Falrinth's The Thing' (released sometimes in 2010).... until it suddenly disappeared :(

    Lol, I've heard that before.

In my opinion, stuffing a game with loads of features like vehicles, spaceships, planets, classes, and evolution doesn't make the game better.

Also, was it Xeno Crisis that made the lighting of the game unbearable?

There are waay better iterations of this concept in sc2.... Xeno Crisis, for example.
